New cedar shingles on a Portland house
General contractor · St. Johns

St. Johns,
its own town.

St. Johns was a city of its own until 1915 and still acts like one. Houses from the 1890s on, and a builder who knows what is under the paint.

The neighborhood

A city until 1915,
a town ever since.

The St. Johns townsite was surveyed in 1865; it incorporated as its own city in 1903 and voted to join Portland in 1915. That gives it some of the oldest housing on the peninsula: Victorians, four-squares and craftsman bungalows with a hundred years and more of paint on them. Since 1865.

Old siding, old roofs, old porches. Cedar shingles and clear cedar trim where the originals have given up; a new roof on a hundred-year-old garage; concrete stairs and a railing that will outlast the next owner. Craftsman restoration, kitchens and baths, ADUs and additions.

If your project is unusual, that's fine. We like unusual. From the FAQ

Built before 1978?
Read this.

Houses from before 1978 can have lead-based paint under the newer coats, and most of the houses here are older than that. The federal rule (the EPA's Renovation, Repair and Painting rule) says anyone paid to disturb painted surfaces in those homes has to be certified; in Oregon that is a licence from the CCB. Kenton Woodwork holds the Lead-Based Paint Renovation licence (CCB 230699), so the dusty parts of a remodel are contained, cleaned up and done the way the rule says. Check it on the CCB's lead-safe search.

Where do you work?

We're based in North Portland, Oregon, and work across the Portland metro. We're also licensed in Washington (L&I KENTOWL766Q1) for projects in Clark County.

Our house was built before 1978. Does that change anything?

Do you do free estimates?

It depends on the project. The first meet-up is always free. If it's a larger project (over $20k) with a lot of elements, we use a pre-construction contract to cover the time spent exploring your options properly.

Do I need an architect, engineer or designer?

Are you getting the project permitted? We recommend doing things the right way rather than taking shortcuts, and larger projects often require these professionals. Outside of custom woodwork we don't do CAD or design work, but we're glad to work alongside your designer or architect.
